Spain is one of the most popular destinations in the world, and over 53 million people came here last year. This is great news for the tourist industry, but if you take a moment to think about that number it begins to seem a bit overwhelming - not least because Spanish tourist spots are becoming incredibly crowded. This works for many people, but if you want to relax and get some peace and quiet it might not be ideal. That said, there are some ways to go on cheap holidays in Spain and avoid the masses.
Hiking holidays are a sure-fire way to escape the crowds, as very few people associate Spain with this pursuit. Instead, they focus on the beaches and the islands, yet the scenery here is absolutely stunning and you will find great hikes everywhere. Andalusia in the south of the country has a collection of amazing trails that will take you up into the mountains and foothills for some truly astounding views. Once there you will truly get to relax and enjoy the country.
Most people go on holiday to Spain between Easter and the end of summer; naturally, during this period resorts get very busy and prices rise. There is no reason you need to conform to this season, and if you are intent on visiting one of the cities you would be best served going during the winter. You will not be tortured by the heat (which can be unbearable in August) and there will be no crowds. This might not work for people looking for seaside retreats, however in this case you can still plan to avoid very busy times. For instance, be sure to avoid British school holidays, as these weeks will see the beaches flooded with families from the UK.
Finally, if you plan an original trip you will have no problem with the crowds. This means eschewing package holidays and beach-side resorts and doing some research that will take you to great hidden destinations. Take a trip up to the Pyrenees, visit medieval castles in the interior or take in the unique culture of the Basques. There is so much to see in Spain, and, thankfully, often the best bits are hidden away from the crowds.

Hi, I am planning a trip for my family of 4 which includes 2 adult children 20 and 18. I am a travel agent in Canada and unfamiliar with spain. We will be looking at accommodation from August 6 to 18th. I am looking for a place with a great beach, culture and not extremely touristy. Looking for old spanish culture, good restaurants, artsy type shopping.
Thanks
Kris

It has to be Gandia (to my mind) which has all that you have indicated and more and is only a 50 minute train ride into glorious Valencia city (with enough culture, shopping and artsy stuff to keep you going for a long time). Check out http://www.villa-florencia.com/ and put ‘Gandia’ into the Search of this site for more info. Terrific beaches…
