TOM JONES CONCERT
Well, amazing! Tom Jones is coming to Gandia in Spain to give a concert on Tuesday the 16th August 2011. You may think that ‘It’s not unusual’ but I would say that it is not far off it – given that, as far as I know, this will be first time that Tom Jones has appeared in Gandia during his incredibly long career. The latter, I think, started (amazingly!) in 1963.
Do you remember ‘What’s new Pussycat’ and the ‘Green, Green Grass of Home’? They should have the Spanish perplexed!
In any event, the Tom Jones concert in Gandia should be well worth attending. It will be on the Playa de Gandia, adjacent to the port area of Gandia at the Avinguda de la Pau and, as it is being put on by Gandia Ayuntamiento (the Town Hall), it will probably be free – but do check first! Equally, knowing Gandia, the Tom Jones concert should be reasonably intimate with an opportunity for you to be not too far away from the stage itself.
Meanwhile, Gandia will also be hosting a concert (in the same location as Tom Jones) by Julio Iglesias on Sunday the 14th August 2011. Like Tom Jones, Julio Iglesias needs little introduction as he has sold, evidently, over 300 million records. Indeed, you may remember one of his first English language hits ‘Begin the Beguine’ – although I have no idea what ‘Buguine’ is (do you?).

JULIO IGLESIAS CONCERT
So, if you are around Gandia in August, why not come and see Tom Jones and Julio Iglesias in concert? Both concerts in Gandia should be great and, if you have not been to Gandia before then you are in for a lovely surprise as the town has some of the best (Blue Flagged) beaches in Spain.
Gandia is also a town notable for the dramatic verdant mountains that surround it and the great shopping (wonderful boutiques) that are in the old town centre. It is only 70 kms from Valencia City (with a return ticket by train costing about 8 Euros) and takes around 50 minutes. It is a wonderful place to come to and there is more than enough to do if you want to come for a day out before seeing either the Tom Jones concert or the Julio Iglesias concert. Whilst neither Tom Jones concert nor the Julio Iglesias may represent exactly the pure traditions of the culture of Spain they should be fun…Book your Gandia Hotel
Hi Nick
just as I was describing to GH how I came to send a definition of the word ‘skanking’ to the OED, you ask what ‘beguine’ means. I promise I only looked it up to check I was right: it’s a Caribbean dance. What I did learn from the OCED was that it comes from the Caribbean French for ‘infatuation’.
More interestingly, when those early nude photos of Marilyn Monroe emerged, some years after she became a film star, she was asked [rather pointlessly, given the visual evidence], ” Did you have nothing on?”
She replied, “Sure. ‘Begin the Beguine’ “
Hi Nick
I got an error message when I posted this earlier, so excuse me if this is a duplicate. I believe the Revolver Maps thing to the left makes comments load really slowly or sometimes time out.
Just as I was recounting to GH how I submitted a meaning of the word ‘skanking’ to the OED [and got a grateful reply], you ask what ‘beguine’ means. Having played jazz drums – ['The American Standard Songbook'] I happen to know it’s a dance. In addition, my OCED tells me that it comes from the Caribbean French for ‘infatuation’

“Oh sure. ‘Begin The Beguine’ “
Very good, Chris! I like the ‘infatuation’ which explains everything. As to the lovely Marilyn – what can one say. I suspect that she was a lot more than the dumb blonde she got portrayed… Sorry, if things are slow which I suspect as to do with Telefonica which has been plaguing us and probably anyone else in Spain…
