One of my favourite comedy sketches is that performed by the inimitable American comedian W. C. Fields – namely his famous and wonderfully funny billiard sketch. It is superb and performed by a comic master who was renowned for his genuine skills as a billiard player and his amazing ability to do billiard trick shots.
But what has all this to do with Spain, I hear you ask?
Well, in a few days time (between the 10th – 11th September 2011), eight of the world’s top trick shot billiard players are competing in Gandia in Valencia Province, Spain for the Juanjo Trilles Cup of Creative Artistic Billiards. This is in support of the Juan Jose Trilles Foundation for Development of Knowledge and the Arts and is under the patronage of Dr. Juanjo Trilles – the founder and chairman of AuraPortal, an international software company.
Sadly, the competition is by invite only but the competition will be filmed and promises to be fascinating if the film clip below is anything to go by. Certainly, the shots undertaken by players of creative billiards are simply astonishing and worth watching – even if billiards is not your game.
As you can see from the clip, the Juanjo Trilles Cup of Creative Artistic Billiards will have Roberto Rojas (El Mago del Marfil), Miguel Torres, Jean Reverchon, Juan Carlos Cuadrado (El Brazo de Dios), Mike Massey, Santo Viglianesi (Italian Champion), Martin van Rhee and Florian (Venom) Kohler participating. All of these are really ‘big names’ in the artistic billiards world and they will be competing hard to win the competition by undertaking the most exceptional billiard trick shots possible.
I just wonder who will win and what exactly he will do? Whatever it is – it is bound to be breathtaking!
In any event, once the Juanjo Trilles Cup competition video is available I shall Post it here – so keep an eye out for it! I bet it will make extraordinary viewing…
Finally, no mention of W.C. Fields is possible without stating at least a couple of his quips, which are legendary. It was, after all, W.C Fields who said ‘Twas a woman drove me to drink. I never had the courtesy to thank her’ and ‘Ah, yes, Mae West – a plumber’s idea of Cleopatra…’ and ‘Some contemptible scoundrel stole the cork from my lunch…’
