TORREVIEJA MARINA

For many people, beach holidays in Torrevieja are exactly what Spain is all about.

After all, Torrevieja provides almost everything that many people want from their holidays in Spain: consistently fine weather, great beaches, an azure Mediterranean sea, a lively nightlife, a pretty marina, plenty of golf courses, an elegant promenade, good shopping and lots of accommodation.

However, Torrevieja provides something else special to English speakers: an infastructure that has developed over many years to be English language user-friendly.

10 Things not to forget when you go on your Spanish holiday

Indeed, for many people, the fact that Torrevieja is English speaking user-friendly is a persuasive reason for coming for their beach holidays to Torrevieja.  It means that they are not linguistically challenged and can enjoy their summer holidays in Spain – without all the embarassment and problems of having to grapple with Spanish to get anything done.

Torrevieja, of course, has a long history as a Spanish holiday destination and has had plenty of time to hone down its appeal to foreigners.  This it has done successfully whilst also, for a long time, broadening its appeal to foreigners who want to live in Spain.  As a consequence, huge estates with permanent housing have grown up around Torrevieja to provide homes for North Europeans pleased to retire to the sun and an al fresco life – within somewhere that has fine facilities and amenities for full time life.

Certainly, the Torrevieja area is not short of shops and commercial centres and there is little that you do not need that you cannot buy there – whilst invariably being served by someone English or a Spaniard with a decent grasp of English.  This is matched by a range of easily accessible activities from sailing (Torrevieja has a large marina) and diving to golf, walking and cycling.  It is also great place for birdwatching in Spain because of its extraordinaryily large salt lagoons.

Meanwhile, Torrevieja is well located for Alicante airport which is a short drive away – but far enough for the flights to Alicante to have no noise impact or distrubance to Torrevieja itself.  Perhaps as importantly, the sheer number of people wanting beach holidays in the Torrevieja area and the numbers residing permanently there mean that there is usually no shortage of cheap flights to Alicante.  This is vital – as cheap flights to airports thoughout the year to places such as Alicante (and nearby Murcia) only continue uninterrupted if there is a sufficient continual demand.

THE PROMENADE AT TORREVIEJA

Not surprisingly, there is a lot of accomodation in Torrevieja for holidaymakers and this varies considerably from villa rentals in Torrevieja (a civilised way to holiday in Spain!) to hotel rooms and rental flats.  Needless to say, whilst it is usually easy to obtain acommodation in Torrevieja out of season it is best to book up well in advance for the summer when the town (permanent population approx. 105,000) grows enormously.

Certainly, beach holidays in Spain look as if they will be popular for a long time to come, not least because, even out of season, Torrevieja has an enviable climate.  A few days ago (early December) I was in Torrevieja and it was hot enough to have people sun bathing in trunks and bikinis on the beach.  I saw no-one swimming but the bars and restaurants had their outside terraces full of people enjoying a late breakfast!

Happy days!
